NSHN AUXILIARIES

Blind River site Auxiliary

Since 1962, the Auxiliary men and women have assisted the Blind River site in providing the best patient care with volunteer service to the hospital, its patients, and its staff.  The auxiliary is seen as a ‘face’ out in the community volunteering with events to raise money with the goal of keeping our healthcare local and at our convenience.

Currently, the Auxiliary has approximately 100 members who volunteer in a variety of ways:

  • Running the Hospital’s ‘Gift Connection’ shop
  • Volunteering at the Blind River Blood Donor Clinics and Algoma Health Unit Flu Clinics.
  • Organizing the annual Tree of Lights Campaign to celebrate Christmas time with Golden Birches Long Term Care residents
  • Supply comfort bags to acute care patients
  • Operate a Tuck Cart called Snack Attack for patients
  • Partner with other charities to raise funds for hospital equipment

Every year the Auxiliary provides funds to the hospital toward hospital equipment.  Recently the Auxiliary provided $36,000 toward the purchase of a portable Ultra-Sound for the Emergency Unit of the hospital and $11,000 towards Tele-Health Equipment.

We invite you to volunteer your time to support our hospital.  Meet new people, share your expertise, learn new skills; and feel good about helping others.  You can be an Active Member, or an Associate Member.   An Associate Member does not attend meetings, receives an annual schedule of auxiliary activities, and supports the auxiliary by attending events or providing financial support.

If you are interested in becoming an active or associate auxiliary member, please contact Bea Jensen, President at 705-356-1923, or Cathy Jensen, Secretary at 705-356-1028.

Thessalon site Auxiliary

The Thessalon site Auxiliary also runs its own fundraising events to support their local hospital. These events include a Valentine’s bake sale, a ‘red-tag’ day in September, as well as a soup and sandwich luncheon. This year funding has been put towards an ECG Machine and a Halter Monitor.

We are very happy to have some new members join us and as always are very happy with the support that we receive from our community.   If anyone is interested in becoming a member they can join us at a meeting or contact a member for more info.  We also have a Facebook page that they can message us on.  We can also be contacted at 705 - 842 - 0001 or at work at 705 - 842 - 2322.

Matthews Memorial site Auxiliary

Although small, membersof the Matthews Memorial site Auxiliary work to put fund fundraiser events together in order to aid the Matthews Memorial Site. These events include a community night the last Friday of July in Richard’s Landing that includes a parade, food, and bands. Other events such as an annual quilt raffle, and a Health Week Luncheon help to increase support.  These events, and the help of community funding, has donated $10,500 to the hospital and clinic last year. Donations were put towards a portable vital signs monitor, exterior bench, pager system, treatment recliner, new mattresses, as well as a CR grid for the X-ray department.

This year, we will be sending two members to the.  Regional Spring Conference in Parry Sound in April.  Our biggest hurdle is recruitment of new members.  We continue to maintain 12‐14 members, most of them active.  We continue to explore ways to recruit and retain members in order to keep our Auxiliary alive and flourishing. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Matthews Memorial site Auxiliary, please contact Sue Barlow at: ksbarlow@vianet.ca.
