Acute Care Unit

The Acute Care Unit (ACU) at our Blind River site is a 16 bed unit that provides comprehensive, collaborative care to patients admitted to our hospital. We have both private and semi-private rooms. The ACU team is a combination of full and part time Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), Personal Support Workers (PSWs), and on-site Providers.

Visiting an Inpatient on ACU

Visitors are permitted between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

We ask that there are no more than two visitors at a time per patient.

If you are visiting an inpatient, please refrain from bringing the following items:

  • Large sums of money

  • Jewelry or items of sentimental value

  • Non-prescription drugs or alcohol

  • Balloons or Latex products

Where is the ACU located / how do I find this unit from the main entrance?

Upon entering the Main Entrance, walk directly down the hallway in front of you.

At the end of the hallway, veer to the left.

You will see "Acute Care Unit" on a large red sign above a double-door at the end of the hallway. Once you go through these doors, you are in ACU! The Nursing Station is located on your right, after you've entered the unit.

NOTE: During an outbreak (i.e., COVID-19, influenza, etc.), visitors may be restricted from ACU. Current information will be shared on our home page and on NSHN's social media platforms regarding visitation.

If you are experiencing cold or flu like symptoms, please DO NOT visit, as you are at risk of spreading the illness to our inpatients, residents, staff, and Providers.

Virtual Visitation Program

NSHN recognizes and acknowledges the importance and inherent value of having family members and loved ones visit and provide support to inpatients and residents.

However, situations may arise when in-person visits are not possible (i.e., distance, outbreak restrictions, etc.). Virtual Visitation provides accessible visiting services, so essential family connections continue to be supported.

How do I schedule a Virtual Visit?

I am an inpatient:

Talk to a member of your Care Team (nurse, doctor, physiotherapist, etc.). They will put you in touch with the right person to help schedule a visit. The day of the visit, a staff member will come to your room with an iPad and set everything up to make sure everything goes smoothly.

I am a family member or loved one of a current inpatient:

Talk to a member of your loved one’s Care Team. They will speak with your loved one to determine:

  1. if they would like a Virtual Visit

  2. the best time of day for the visit.

Once the visit is scheduled, you will be provided with the information to be able to connect with your loved one (usually provided via a hyperlink in an email).
