Acute Care Unit
Our Acute Care Unit at our Blind River site is a 16-bed unit and provides 24-hour comprehensive care in a safe, supportive environment designed to meet your individual needs. We offer both private and semi-private accommodations, including two cardiac care rooms, a dedicated palliative care room, and a holistic hospice suite to ensure comfort and dignity at every stage of care.
Our team of nurses, providers, and allied health professionals work together using a person-centred approach - partnering with you and your loved ones throughout your stay. On a weekly basis the interdisciplinary health care team will meet to review every admitted patient. The purpose of this meeting is to review the relevant current health status and discuss discharge planning for those patients with a complicated discharge plan.
NOTE: All patients have the right to remove their implied consent to have their care discussed at Interdisciplinary Rounds. Speak with your care team, if you wish to do so.
YOUR CARE. YOUR VOICE.
"How can we help you?" - Partnering in YOUR Care
One of the most important steps toward receiving the best possible care is becoming an active partner in your care team. Your voice, questions, and involvement truly matter.
Visiting an Inpatient on ACU
NSHN recognizes and acknowledges the importance and the inherent value of visiting with family and loved ones. Person-centered care is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships among health care professionals, patients and families. This collaboration assures that health care is responsive to priorities, preferences, and values of patients and their families/loved ones.
Preferred visiting hours are 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and we ask that there are no more than two (2) visitors at a time per patient.
If you are visiting a patient, please do not bring the following items:
-
large sums of money
-
jewelry or items of sentimental value
-
non-prescription drugs or alcohol
-
balloons or latex products
NOTE: During an outbreak (i.e., COVID-19, influenza, etc.), visitors may be restricted from ACU. Family/loved ones and Care Partners of inpatients will be contacted directly if changes to visiting protocols are required.
If you are experiencing cold or flu like symptoms, please DO NOT visit, as you are at risk of spreading the illness to our inpatients, residents, other visitors, staff, and Providers.
Virtual Visiting Program
Situations may arise when in-person visits are not possible (i.e., distance, outbreak restrictions, etc.). Virtual Visiting provides accessible visiting services, so essential family connections continue to be supported.

How do I schedule a Virtual Visit?
I am an inpatient:
Talk to a member of your Care Team (nurse, doctor, physiotherapist, etc.). They will put you in touch with the right person to help schedule a visit. The day of the visit, a staff member will come to your room with an iPad and set everything up to make sure everything goes smoothly.
I am a family member or loved one of a current inpatient:
Talk to a member of your loved one’s Care Team. They will speak with your loved one to determine:
-
if they would like a Virtual Visit
-
the best time of day for the visit
Once the visit is scheduled, you will be provided with the information to be able to connect with your loved one (usually provided via a hyperlink in an email).

Television, Phone & Internet
There is no cost for television services, and they are available in each of our patient rooms.
