What is a Family Council?
An organized, self-led group of family members and friends of residents at a long-term care home.
Key Functions
Advocacy: to improve the quality of life for ALL residents.
Support: a support network for families who are navigating the challenges of long-term care, offering a place for peer support and guidance.
Education: educate members about the home's operations, resident rights, and the rights of the home's licensee.
Communication: serve as a vital link between families and the home's staff, communicating concerns and feedback to the administration.
Improvement: actively collaborate with the home to provide feedback and suggestions for improving resident experiences and the overall quality of care.
Activities: sponsor and plan activities for residents, often in collaboration with the home.

How often does the Family Council meet?
Golden Birches Family Council meets 5 times annually.
What time do Council meetings occur?
1:30 p.m.
Where is the Council meeting held?
In The Birches Dining Room.
Family Satisfaction Survey
The Family Satisfaction Survey is completed by NSHN's Patient Relations Officer during multiple touchpoints:

6-week Care Conference with new residents/families

annual Care Conference with current residents/families

ad-hoc when Care Conferences are scheduled due to changes in resident status/care
These surveys are facilitated in-person, over the phone, or via email with the “main contact” (family member/loved one/POA) for each current resident at The Birches.
