Resident Rights & Safety

Resident Rights

Under the Fixing Long-Term Care Homes Act (FLTCA, 2021) Golden Birches Terrace must post and follow the Residents Bill of Rights.

The Residents' Bill of Rights spells out in detail residents' rights and the responsibilities of the home to fully respect, promote and support these rights, as well as every residents' autonomy. It reminds everyone - residents, friends, family, staff and providers - that residents of long-term care homes are valued members of the community.

The Birches also maintains a Residents' Council. The Council, comprised of current residents, meets monthly to discuss pertinent issues at The Birches. All residents are encouraged to attend meetings and discuss ideas and concerns and are encouraged to represent their peers when voicing opinions.

Resident Safety & Safety Devices

Versus Information System

Golden Birches Terrace uses the Versus Information System, which is an electronic nurse-call system. Residents and NSHN staff wear a badge at all times, which is pressed to call for assistance. The nursing staff receive a call and message on their pagers, and this message identifies the resident and the location of the call. A message is also sent to and appears on the computer located at the staff station.

Exterior Doors

All exterior doors have mechanisms that prevent unauthorized entry and exit for the security of our residents. Our residents have the right to be self-determining and maintain their dignity and independence and are free to move about independently without undue barriers or restraints.

Safety Devices

Safety devices, such as lap belts on wheelchairs, are used for the safety of some residents following a comprehensive assessment of need. The order to use these types of "restraints" is one that must come from a Provider and are only used as a last resort in situations where a resident, or others, are at a heightened level of risk.
